Scholarship Program

PURPOSE

The program is available to graduating students and former graduates of Northumberland Regional High School (NRHS) and Pictou Academy (PA), who are residents of Pictou West.  Up to a maximum of six (6) scholarships valued at $1,000 each will be awarded each calendar year.  Only one (1) scholarship may be granted to any individual during their undergraduate post secondary years.

SCHOLARSHIPS & ELIGIBILITY

The Program offers the following scholarships:

A. Post-Secondary Scholarships

  • Intended to be awarded to former students of NRHS and PA who have completed the first year of study in the specified health fields at a recognized post-secondary school  
  • Applicants are required to:
  • Complete a scholarship program application form
  • Enclose an official transcript of most recent grades
  • Enclose verification of acceptance (proof of enrollment) at a post-secondary school for the upcoming academic year
  • Enclose an essay, up to 500 words, on any topic related to the applicant’s chosen field of study, citing personal reasons for their career choice
  • Enclose demonstrated volunteer contribution and/or work in the health care field

B. High School Scholarships

  • Intended to be awarded to graduating students of NRHS and PA who have been accepted for their first year of study in the specified health fields at a recognized post-secondary school      
  • Applicants are required to:
  • Complete a scholarship program application form
  • Enclose an official transcript of most recent grades (minimum of an 85% average in all subjects)
  • Enclose verification of acceptance (proof of enrollment) at a post-secondary school for the upcoming academic year
  • Enclose an essay, up to 500 words, on any topic related to the applicant’s chosen field of study, citing personal reasons for their career choice
  • Enclose demonstrated volunteer contribution in a health care field

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Applications for the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Foundation Scholarship Program must be:

  • Mailed to the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 504, Pictou, NS  B0K 1H0.  Applications must be post-marked no later than the last Friday of May; or 
  • Submitted to the NRHS or PA School Guidance Office by the last Friday of May

SELECTION AND AWARD

The Bursary Committee will review applications and make recommendations to the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Foundation at a regular meeting.  High School Scholarships will be announced at NRHS and PA graduation ceremonies.
